The language of the American clinical setting has many unique terms, abbreviations and acronyms. Sudden exposure to this new language is challenging for both American students and international students coming to the United States to begin or continue their studies in the health professions. This course provides strategies for learning the terms, abbreviations and acronyms that are used commonly in the technical language of the clinical unit. Self-pacing and self-assessment are encouraged. Students will be encouraged to use an on-line clinical dictionary focused on those terms, abbreviations, and acronyms that commonly challenge students who are new to American clinical settings.

Interactive Language Learning: Vital Signs
Week 2: Understanding the structure of clinical terms, abbreviations and acronyms
Interactive Language Learning: The Clinical Unit and Bedside Environment
Week 3: Employing strategies for learning American English clinical abbreviations and acronyms
Interactive Language Learning: Emergencies, Medication and IV fluid Administration
Week 4: Using clinical language safely
Interactive Language Learning: Symptoms, Signs, Conditions and Diseases
Week 5: Attending to the interface of language and culture
Interactive Language Learning: Laboratory Tests and Diagnostic Procedures
Week 6: Assessing your ability to use what you have learned
Interactive Language Learning: Practice hearing, seeing, assessing, reacting to true-to-life clinical situations
