简介: This seven-and-a-half week online course will introduce you to basic writing skills, especially as they pertain to novel writing. This includes everything from basic story construction and character development, through the intricacies of plotting. You’ll learn to identify skill strengths and weaknesses. You’ll also start thinking like a writer by developing your writing and analytical skills. During the course, you’ll learn to talk about writing as working writers do, and develop a toolkit of techniques, which you’ll use throughout your career. Cost of enrollment: $65.00 Required Materials: The textbook for this course is 21 Days to a Novel by Michael A. Stackpole It is available as a PDF from Stormwolf.com Cost: $20 The sample novel for this course is Star Wars X-wing Rogue Squadron by Michael A. Stackpole. (I am using this book as an example because I am absolutely certain I know what the author was thinking when he was writing this book or any passage in it, and that I can reliably relate the author’s true thoughts and intentions.) The book is widely available in paper or ebook format. There is one other book each student should read: any novel published in the last two years, written by an author after whom you would like to style your writing. In the first week you'll share your draft-choice novel with others. These shared books should form a solid library of examples to study. (Writers must read other writers.)

主页: https://www.canvas.net/courses/literature-and-change-in-europe

简介: This course provides an in-depth view on new ways of approaching literature and culture, in an extended sense ranging from magazines to digital literature. The emphasis on intermediality aims to provide students with innovative tools for understanding changing paradigms in postmodernity. We will focus on the interplay between literature, oral, and visual culture, as well as key concepts in cultural and textual analysis, such as literacy, fictionality, transmediality, popular culture, hybridity, and creolisation. Finally, the context against which we will place these concepts is Europe, by challenging classical conceptions of Europe as a geographical, homogeneous entity and epistemological framework, we will propose a more fluid concept that positions Europe as a changing matrix of cultural, political, and economical values where post-colonial migrations and globalisation are quickly reconfiguring its old, hegemonic position on the global map. The course consists of seven modules each focusing on a different topic and taught by a different university with faculty interaction and feedback provided. The participating universities are: KU Leuven, Belgium University of Granada, Spain University of Bologna, Italy University of Groningen, The Netherlands University of Lisbon, Portugal University of Aarhus, Denmark University of Tartu, Estonia There is also a brief component for advanced self-study, which will give student the opportunity to take a more in-depth look at any one of the course module topics. Math Refresher with College Success Tips (Canvas) 0 个评论 关注

开始时间: 04/22/2022 持续时间: 6 weeks

主页: https://www.canvas.net/courses/math-refresher-with-college-success-tips

简介: This course is designed primarily for students who will be starting or restarting college within the next year. It will provide math refresher materials covering a wide range of mathematical concepts together with information about success in college. Incoming college students are typically placed in college math courses based on placement exam scores. Students often take these placement exams with minimal preparation or after a long break since their last math class. The study materials in the course will help students prepare for placement exams, and higher scores mean fewer required math courses in college. Students who have already taken a placement exam (such as the ACT) can also use these materials to study and then retest, hopefully scoring higher. The course will also be valuable for anyone who just wants to refresh their math skills. The provided study materials are individualized based on a student’s current knowledge. Each student will be provided a customized learning path that maximizes efficiency so that study time is spent where it’s needed most. Beyond math content, the course will also provide college success material such as test-taking strategies, new student orientation, and study techniques. All of this material can be accessed separately from the math content so even if a student is already placed highly in math, or has tested out of it completely, the course will provide valuable information to help the student orient to college and to get the most out of the college experience.

简介: SAFETY, FUNCTION, ACTION is an online course for public health, healthcare, and emergency preparedness and response professionals. SAFETY, FUNCTION, ACTION is a framework of six strategies for achieving and maintaining a high level of disaster health and well being. “Disaster health” was introduced as a concept and discipline in Homeland Security Presidential Directive-21 (HSPD-21). SAFETY, FUNCTION, ACTION defines “disaster health” as, “Maximal safety in situations of threat, optimal function in situations of high stress, and effective action in response to emergencies, disasters, and extreme events.” To remain congruent with HSPD-21, SAFETY, FUNCTION, ACTION integrates elements of disaster medical care, public health, and behavioral health within a single framework. This course is dually focused on disaster responders and the disaster survivors they serve. As a result, the framework also introduces two skill sets: a "PREPARE" skill set focused on responders, and a "RESPOND" skill set focused on support for survivors.

简介: This course revolves around the work of revising writing, learning, and engaging with language and community. In Act One, you will explore who you are as a learner as you write about yourself and your language use. In Act Two, you will consider who you are as a communicator as you critique texts, persuade audiences, and collaborate with others. We’ve designed this course to help you revise how you write and to help you collect a toolkit of effective reading, writing, and learning strategies. Each episode integrates academic and social contexts (i.e., Twitter, Facebook, ELI peer review application) to encourage a wide application of the skills you acquire during the course. The skills you will practice in this course (like narration, summary, etc.) are fairly typical for writing classes at many U.S. universities; however our course focuses on you as a writer and thinker. Recognizing specific learning and communication practices and considering ways to employ them can make you more successful in future coursework—and in all communication.

What is Music?: Finding Your Song (Canvas) 0 个评论 关注

开始时间: 04/22/2022 持续时间: 8 weeks

主页: https://www.canvas.net/courses/what-is-music

简介: At its core, this course is about providing students with a broader understanding of music as a uniquely human activity. This will be accomplished by discussing the music you actually listen to, learning about various dimensions and elements of music, and creating your own music. No previous experience making music is necessary. This course is designed for individuals at all levels of musical understanding and experience. The fundamental assumption underlying the course design is that ALL people are innately musicians, whether that musicianship is expressed in the form of listening, performing, or creating music. Ever since you were born (and even before) you have been developing an expertise in music based on your own personal musical experience. This is similar to how you have been developing a language expertise that is dependent on your individual experience with the language(s) that you speak. It is your own individual musical expertise that forms the entry point into this course and on which this course is built. These are the course’s four learning goals: Acquire a more robust understanding of the various dimensions of music Acquire a richer language for talking about (describing and evaluating) music Integrate those understandings to create and evaluate your own music Apply this musical language to describe and evaluate music of others The entire course is framed around answering one basic, but deceptively complex, question: What is music? The course is structured to help answer this question by approaching it from various perspectives, including the following: Music as Human Activity Music as Metaphor Music as Emotion Music as Physics Music as Form Music as Culture Within each module, you will do each of the following: Learn new material through various media, including course readings, presentations, videos, websites, etc. Actively participate in discussions, which are designed to give you opportunities to apply and broaden your knowledge of this new material. Demonstrate your knowledge by completing short quizzes on the material (only some modules). Create musical products of your own, with support and help embedded within the course itself (you do NOT need to be able to play an instrument or have previous experience making/writing music). Review, evaluate, critique, and discuss projects from your peers.

主页: https://www.canvas.net/courses/x-word-grammar-sector-analysis

简介: Intended for English language teachers and students, world language teachers and students, and everyone else wishing to understand the structure of English, this course explains English holistically by describing the fixed order of the sentence and the interrelationship of its parts. This course is not a series of independent lessons, but a deeper, more focused, unified look into the structure of English. Participants quickly discover that all English sentences follow the same principles by identifying the places contained in every sentence and the types of relationships and phrases found in those places. From day one, participants describe English sentences in a simple, straightforward manner and are able to apply this information for editing purposes. These skills facilitate the teaching and learning of other languages as well. Course content is taken from linguistics and adapted to language teaching and learning. Course content is cumulative, applies directly to every sentence, and becomes the method for describing how words and phrases are combined into sentences to create meaning. X-words (traditionally called auxiliary verbs or helping verbs) are our keys for unlocking and revealing the hidden structure of every sentence. Class content is provided through the X-word Grammar video series that will be available at
