主页: https://www.canvas.net/courses/ethics-and-values-in-a-multicultural-world

简介: This course presents the academic foundations and historical development of multicultural moral decision-making and helps students develop their ability to interrelate reflectively, responsibly, and respectfully with a society of increasing intercultural connections. Students will first explore how people approach moral decision-making, and then how multicultural and intercultural moral decision-making ought to be made. This approach is analogous to how grammar first describes the way language is in fact used, and how it then prescribes the way language ought to be used. A blend of online instructional strategies will be utilized throughout this course. Students can expect to spend three to six hours per week to complete and submit all course deliverables. Preparation for exams will require additional time. Upon successful completion of this course, students should have the ability to engage in serious reflection on issues of ethics and values related to intercultural and multicultural decision-making.

主页: https://www.canvas.net/courses/statistics-in-education-for-mere-mortals

简介: This short course will provide a hands-on introduction to statistics used in educational research and evaluation. Participants will learn statistical concepts, principles, and procedures by building Excel spreadsheets from scratch in a guided learning approach using short video-based tutorials. Examples of specific skills to be learned include scales of measurement, measures of central tendency, measures of variability, and the computation of the following: mean, mode, and median, standard deviation, z (standard) scores, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient (r), correlated-samples t test (i.e. dependent t test), independent-samples t test (i.e. independent t test), and a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The course is designed primarily for two audiences: 1) educational professionals who would like to be more informed about how to compute basic statistics and how to use them intelligently in their work; and 2) first-year doctoral students who want a short and friendly introduction (or brush up) to basic statistics before taking full graduate-level statistics courses. However, this course would be useful to anyone who wants a good, short, hands-on, friendly introduction to the most fundamental ideas of statistics in education.

主页: https://www.canvas.net/courses/american-counter-terrorism-law-1

简介: This online course will introduce you to American laws related to terrorism and the prevention of terrorism. My approach to the topic is the case-study method. Each week, we will read a case study, along with the statutes, regulations, and other law-related materials relevant to the case. We’ll see how the case was handled in court and what reforms were enacted following the trial. Each week’s assignment will include copies of the relevant laws and court rules, a glossary of terms, background readings, and other supplementary materials. The course will commence with the first attempt by Islamic militants to bring down the World Trade Center towers with a truck bomb in 1993. From there, I'll take you through the major terrorist incidents of the past 20 years, including acts perpetrated by homegrown terrorists, such as the Oklahoma City bombing of 1995 and the trial of the SHAC Seven (animal rights) terrorists in Trenton (NJ) in 2006.

主页: https://www.canvas.net/courses/introduction-to-strategic-thinking

简介: This is a short interdisciplinary course on strategic thinking and some of its most powerful tools. Strategic thinking is not exclusive to business applications or the military. The skills taught in this course can be useful to anyone. Young professionals can use the knowledge to effectively plan their careers, stay-at-home mothers can use it to improve how they communicate with their children, and entrepreneurs can use it to better position their business in the marketplace. Anyone who wants to learn how to think about and solve social, business, personal, environmental, or other problems in smarter and more creative ways will benefit from this course. We will draw lessons and use concepts from economics and game theory, scenario planning, and futures studies, as well as philosophy and language. The course includes reading material, video lectures, and audio content, which is accompanied by short quizzes derived from that content. We will also work on case studies for each topic where students will have an opportunity to practice the tools and frameworks and discuss them with the learning community. At a reasonable pace of approximately one hour per day, a student can finish the course in about one week. The workload will depend on how quickly students consume the content and how much time and effort they wants to devote to the case study assignments. The course will be open for three weeks. This course is designed to be a starting point for people who are just beginning to learn about strategic thinking. It is relatively short, informal, easy to follow, and practical (and hopefully entertaining).

简介: The migration of print resources to electronic formats has changed the way instructional librarians teach students how to use the library effectively. The library itself has changed to include learning spaces and zones with less dedicated space for print resources. In this course, an experienced academic librarian will share his strategies for getting students engaged in the art of library research. He’ll provide a balanced approach to information literacy instruction, which will include games, active learning, and other ways to use media literacy to help students enjoy their time in the library.
