Are you an educator, and have you ever wanted to understand more about how to design learning activities and teach effectively in fully online or blended contexts from those who have practical experience?

The Learning to Teach Online MOOC is designed to help you develop a working understanding of successful online teaching pedagogies that you can apply in your own unique teaching situations. The course provides a solid practically and pedagogically focused foundation for you to begin teaching online for the first time, or to improve the effectiveness of your existing online teaching practice if you already have experience. No matter what type of technology you are interested in exploring, the course will inform you of successful pedagogical approaches for improving your skills in designing online learning activities, assessments and resources.

The course includes a range of case studies featuring real educators in a range of different educational and disciplinary contexts, and provides proven and pragmatic advice to help you to improve your own practice. As well as discussing the benefits of online teaching for educators and students, Learning to Teach Online also acknowledges the frustrations and challenges involved, providing a range of practical strategies to overcome them.

Week 1: What is online teaching and why is it important? Overview of online ethnographies, technologies, resources and activities, and their place in contemporary education.

Week 2: Learning management system or the open web? An examination of the pros and cons of contained systems in educational contexts vs the use of social media and an examination of relevant activities.

Week 3: Overview and exemplification of a range of fully online, blended and mobile learning scenarios, interaction and applications.

Week 4: Planning online learning activities. Understand how to define your learning outcomes, develop appropriate online activities and assessment strategies, and to choose the right technology to use. These themes are continually revisited throughout the remainder of the course.

Week 5: Integrating online resources into your teaching. What role can online resources play in effectively supporting student learning? Understand how to find and use a range of Open Educational Resources (OER) in your class, and explore options for creating your own online resources. Issues of Creative Commons and Copyright in online education are also discussed.

Week 6: Engaging and motivating students, managing your time online, and concepts of assessment feedback and evaluation.
