The global space sector has been experiencing an extensive growth over the past few years, a trend that is expected to continue with many new large satellite constellations and larger exploration projects to be operated in the near-term future. This extensive growth of the space exploitation is due to the reduction of the costs for engineering and developing satellites and relative ground segment and the relative launch services. In such conditions several private satellite operators are now entering the space business market. Satellite systems deployed in near-Earth orbits deliver valuable services to technologically advancing societies on Earth, with a growing dependency on such systems generally believed to be beneficial. However, there are also substantial risks associated with expanding space activities. One major aspect is the pollution of outer space with space debris. This pollution is a tangible risk for collision between satellites and space debris, increasing exponentially the number of objects to be monitored. This course gives an introduction into the various aspects related to space debris, including the different sources, debris, observation and monitoring, modeling, the environment evolution, mitigation and many more. The space environment is a precious resource and need to be preserved for our and for the future generations.
