They explore the themes within them such as love, faith, humanity, and Burns' philosophy. They give a window into Burns' world, and explain his contribution to the Enlightenment. These lectures are for absolute beginners and contain some funny, relatable stories from my own life - which I hope will help the viewer to understand the poetry, and relate to it better. Taking this course will provide students with a good understanding of Burns' poetry, and provide a good first step into the world of Scottish poetry, as well as the Scottish contribution to the Enlightenment. I hope viewers will find the lectures useful, and entertaining. Burns' Biography:Early lifeBurns was born in 1759 in Alloway, Scotland to tenant farmers William Burnes and Agnes Broun. His parents encouraged him to read and he was inspired by the works of Alexander Pope, Henry Mackenzie, and Laurence Sterne.Farm lifeBurns took over the family farm after his father's death in 1784, but the farm was financially troubled. He leased a larger farm to provide income and employment for his sons.PoetryBurns's poetry celebrated Scottish culture, regional experience, and farm life. He wrote in the Scots dialect, as well as standard English, and is known for his satirical poems like Tam O' Shanter and love songs like A Red, Red Rose. He also rewrote and adapted traditional folk songs, including Auld Lang Syne.LegacyBurns's work has inspired many other writers, including John Steinbeck, J. D. Salinger, and Bob Dylan.
