This course blends classical Confucian thought with modern political theory, providing students with a critical understanding of how Confucianism has influenced and continues to influence Chinese political and ethical life.Students will be expected to read and analyze primary and secondary texts from Confucian philosophers, both classical and modern (e.g., Confucius, Mencius, Xunzi, Mou Zongsan, Tang Junyi). Active participation in discussions is essential, especially on topics such as the tension between morality and law, the role of leadership, and the viability of Confucian democracy in the modern world. Assignments will include essays, presentations, and case studies where students critically apply Confucian political thought to contemporary issues.Students should be open to engaging with philosophical texts and be prepared for critical discussions around political ethics, authority, and governance.Prerequisites of this course:Introductory knowledge of political theory and/or philosophy is recommended but not required.Basic understanding of Chinese history is helpful for context, especially with regard to the Imperial Examination system, Confucian scholars, and the intellectual developments of the 20th century.By the end of this course, students will:Discuss the role of Confucianism in contemporary Chinese politics, including debates on human rights, democracy, and civic responsibility.Engage with contemporary debates on the relevance of Confucian ethics in modern global political contexts
