They are soft and can be applied using various sponges to your pastel paper. They are a looser medium and you can create beautiful impressionistic paintings with them. It has a sandpaper like texture and if you don't have this you can use another similar textured paper like UART 800 Grade Paper.I also use Pastel Pencils to add some additional detail.
