At a time of unprecedented medical advances it is difficult to imagine that many medical ailments cannot be cured for a variety of reasons. Sometimes a person refuses medical intervention for religious or philosophical reasons. Sometimes a medical treatment is simply not available. Often, patients find themselves suffering with a variety of debilitating chronic conditions that do not kill, but rob them of quality of life. When a medical solution to a medical problem is available, people should use them. When a solution is not available, however, some people resort to mental changes as a pathway to improving the quality of their lives. This course has several parts; this is the first. This part, the Descent of Light, contains the basic ideas that need to be grasped before any healing - which is essentially a change of the mind - can happen. This part of the larger course on the Metaphysics of Healing includes a quiz. Passing the quiz is a requisite to be invited to subsequent parts of the course. We also discuss scientific pathways to healing other than purely physical interventions. Fantastic examples of this understanding are the science of epigenetics and that of psychoneuroimmunology. Larry Dossey's multi-era framework of medical care is also discussed.
