Energy sources including electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, thermal, or other sources in machines and equipment can be hazardous to workers. During the servicing and maintenance of machines and equipment, the unexpected startup or release of stored energy can result in serious injury or death to workers.Workers servicing or maintaining machines or equipment may be seriously injured or killed if hazardous energy is not properly controlled. Injuries resulting from the failure to control hazardous energy during maintenance activities can be serious or fatal! Injuries may include electrocution, burns, crushing, cutting, lacerating, amputating, or fracturing body parts, and others.Proper lockout/tagout (LOTO) practices and procedures safeguard workers from hazardous energy releases. This course helps to ensure that there is increased safety during maintenance and service of equipment by creating a common understanding of LOTO at your organisation's facilities. Participants are also able to recognize all hazardous energy sources and the means for controlling them through an 8-step lockout procedure. The course also delves into the roles participants have in the overall Facility's Equipment Lockout Program while equipping them with the requisite knowledge to be able to guide their organisation towards compliance with the OSHA standard CFR 1910.147.The LOTO standard (CFR 1910.147.) establishes the employer's responsibility to protect workers from hazardous energy. Employers are also required to train each worker to ensure that they know, understand, and are able to follow the applicable provisions of the hazardous energy control procedures which are treated in this course. At the end of the course participants will be able to;Define what is meant by the term energy isolationDefine terms commonly used in lockout/tagout operationsExplain why energy isolation is important to safe operationsIdentify the regulatory requirements for energy isolationIdentify areas which are exempt from regulatory requirementsGive an overview of employers' responsibilitiesGive an overview of how the locking and tagging process operatesExplain what is contained within a typical lockout procedureIdentify the steps required for restoring equipment to serviceThe course contains case studies, additional explanatory videos, quizzes, further study materials and a the OSHA Fact Sheet on LOTO which describes the practices and procedures necessary to disable machinery or equipment to prevent the release of hazardous energy.
