Do you want to help your baby to become a better communicator?Are you curious about how language is developing in your baby's mind?In this course you will learn about the different stages of development that need to happen before a child can speak or sign. These stages are those required to develop language, and they will apply to babies as well as to anyone who is considered 'non-verbal'. One of the aims of this course is to present the idea that often children and adults who are labelled as "non-verbal" are just at a very early stage of language development. Some of them may never develop speech or meaningful language, but everyone who has an active brain can develop if the right environment is provided. I hope with this course that you can support your children with SEN in the path towards more meaningful communication. You will find some guides to print out with the key language milestones that are typically achieved by children. One is for babies to 0-12 months and, in case you want to look ahead, the other one is for children 0 to 5 years old. Please use the guide only as an aide-memoire: they key information is in the videos! This course is taught in a traditional way and I would like you to receive it in a traditional way: listen to it, figure out what I am saying, think about situations that are familiar to what I am saying, thing about what you can do...and make notes of all of that. You need to have this knowledge 'built inside you' so that you have it when you interact with the child. And for information to grow inside you it needs to be processed by you. The course is presented in a very clear way, and supported by cartoon-style pictures for you to remember the key ideas. My experience when learning about child development stages is that there is so much information that it is hard to 'digest' and to acquire. That is why I have worked really hard into taking the key ideas from each stage, and the most useful strategies to support your baby or your child with SEN to develop their communication.Given my extensive academic and professional career in the field, it is hard to give a reference for everything I have learned. However, two of the core manuals and references I have used to develop this course are the Speech and Language Therapy Book Language and Communication Impairment from Infancy to Adolescence, from Rhea Paul, and the Monitoring Protocol for Deaf Babies (Development Cards and Protocol) developed by the British Government. I hope you will find the course useful and that it will give you clear guidance on how to best support your baby or child with SEN to enter the miraculous world of human communication.
