In this course, the learner will be introduced to qualitative research and the approaches associated with it. The overall objective is that the student will have a better understanding of what qualitative research is by understanding the basics. The learning outcomes are as follows: (1) The student will be able to identify popular qualitative approaches; (2) The student will be able to define the basic components of each popular qualitative approach; (3) The student will be able to articulate the similarities and differences among the popular qualitative approaches; and (4) The student will be able to determine which qualitative approach is best for various studies. Although there are many qualitative approaches to consider, this course examines the five more popular methods and explores the types, characteristics, and challenges. At the end of the course, the student will have the opportunity to summarize each of the five popular methods to help guide them in their understanding and their potential method choice. The course is based on the following text: "Qualitative Inquiry & Research Design: Choosing Among Five Approaches" by John W. Creswell and Cheryl N. Poth (2018) 4th edition. Although the purchase of this textbook is NOT necessary, it is strongly encouraged that anyone seeking to pursue or want to explore qualitative research more deeply should purchase the textbook as a guide.
