This course is designed for the novice electricians, handymen, and do it your selfers. It is great for a homeowner who would like to check electrical components in your house in the most safe and effective way. The course starts of with a description of the different types of electrical measuring devices and shows real time use for each of them. The first unit covers electrical safety and the do's and don'ts of using the various meters. The second unit covers continuity, using the beeper on the meter and using the reading on the monitor if there is one. We will check the continuity of a simple wire, a switching device, a light bulb, a fuse, and other devises that require continuity to operate. Continuity simply means that there is an unterupted electrical path from the input to the output of the item being checked, and substantiates that the component can pass electrical current once power is applied. The next units cover small electrical components like resistors, diodes, capacitors, and even the start and running capacitors on home air conditioners; a component that fails often and can be quite expensive to check when calling in a technician. I dedicated a unit briefly on what resistance is, how it acts in a circuit, color-coded values of a resistor, and double checking them with the multimeter for accuracy. It's important to know the basic elements of a circuit such as voltage, current and resistance, but it will be brief here as I have more detailed lessons in my DC/AC electric courses if you would like to know more.
