This course was originally intended for parents and educators of children with language impairments, in particular for children with dyslexia studying in multilingual settings. The materials I will show here are the result of working with this type of patients/clients. However, these materials and approaches will also be useful for adult learners and for children without dyslexia or language difficulties that are learning French from an older age (hence, when the 'natural language learning' mechanisms that we have as children are not active anymore. The main aim of this course is to bring clarity over the graphophonemic system of French, this is, of how letters and sound are linked to each other. The course also includes clear and phonics- based explanations of the main verb conjugations, as well as multisensory activities to practice key grammar structures.French is one of those not transparent languages: the same sounds can be represented by different spellings. This can make life harder for native readers and for learners of French. In addition, some of the sounds that are used in French don't exist in other languages, as it is the case of the two types of 'e' sounds. This can make learning very challenging for people who are exposed to French after the so-called 'critical period' of language acquisition (after which we don't perceive the sounds of a language in the same distinctive way as a native does). The course is based on sound research and practice, including manuals on Speech and Language Therapy, dyslexia intervention, French phonology and articulation, and different methods to teach foreign languages.The sound system is not all you need to learn a language, but it is the foundation of both speaking and writing. Learners following this course have improved significantly in their confidence to read and write in French. But don't forget that although I can give you the guidance, it is the learner who needs to make the effort to make the change. To make the most of this course you will need to commit to regular practice reading and writing, using the materials provided or the guidance given in the course. The course is original, and it includes illustrations that will hopefully engage both you and, if you are working with another learner, them as well. Therefore, if you or your learners are dyslexic, have a language impairment, or are learning French once your critical period is over, my structured approach will bring clarity and a structured sequence of learning that is based on what has the strongest evidence in education: behavioural - based learning principles.
