This course offers an in-depth exploration of the distinct characteristics of Byzantine architecture, focusing on its development, unique structural innovations, and the cultural influences that shaped its forms. Students will be introduced to key examples of Byzantine religious and secular architecture, including iconic structures like the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and lesser-known but equally significant buildings throughout the Byzantine Empire. The course will cover the defining features of Byzantine architecture, such as the extensive use of domes, mosaics, and centralized plans, while also considering how Byzantine architects adapted and integrated Roman and Eastern influences.A special feature of this course is its inclusion of domestic architecture, often overlooked in traditional Byzantine architectural histories. By examining Byzantine-era palaces in Venice, Italy, students will explore how Byzantine styles extended beyond religious settings and were absorbed into different cultural contexts.
