Adsorption isotherms show how gases adhere to the surface of a solid (adsorbent) at different pressures. Based on nitrogen gas adsorption, the BET method is essential for analyzing materials such as catalysts, pharmaceuticals, ceramics, carbons, sorbents, metal-organic frameworks, and building materials. This course provides fundamental knowledge and practical skills in surface area analysis, pore volume, and material pore distribution.Topics We Will Discuss:Theory of the BET model, Types of Isotherms, and HysteresisSample Preparation (Weighing and Degassing process)Experimental Procedure with the Quantachrome InstrumentProcessing Experimental Data using the NovaWin ProgramThe BET theory is a mathematical model used to calculate the surface area of a solid. We'll consider the BET equation and its parts. We will look at some of the different isotherm profiles that can form as the adsorption proceeds, which depend on the porous features of the sample and give a good picture of the range and complexity of possible isotherm profiles. In the part of Sample preparation, we'll pay attention to the degassing process. We'll look at a machine called NOVA 4200, produced by Quantachrome. We'll also use the NOVA Win program to work with a gas sorption analyser.By enrolling, you'll gain a deep understanding of these concepts and their applications in real-world scenarios.
