*** **Course Name:** Sociology: Culture **Course Overview:** This course offers learners an opportunity to delve into the world of Sociology, focusing on the theme of "Culture." Aligned with concepts addressed in university-level studies, the course aims to systematically analyze culture, understood as the set of codes and symbolic practices used by members of a society. The curriculum is divided into the following sections: 1) Definition and Components of Culture, 2) Cultural Pluralism and Forms of Cultural Differentiation, 3) Generations, Identity, Ethnicity, and Race, and 4) Models of Interaction between Majority and Minority Groups. The sociology of cultural processes is the systematic analysis of culture, generally understood as the set of codes and symbolic practices utilized by the members of a society. Sociologists, like Georg Simmel, define culture as "the cultivation of individuals through recourse to external forms objectified in the course of history." Within the sociological field, culture is analyzed as a complex of ways of thinking and describing social relations, as well as of using material objects that define a given shared way of life. Pluralism, in the social sciences, refers to the condition of a society in which individuals and groups diverse in ethnicity, religion, culture, political orientation, or other aspects, coexist in mutual tolerance, preserving autonomous participation in public life and maintaining autonomous management of their own cultural or ideological traditions. Pluralism denies the existence of a universal and objective truth, and therefore is often considered a danger to certain authorities, typically, but not exclusively, religious ones. It is clear that, while pluralism attempts to harmonize (without assimilation and without denying differences) diverse positions, such as the Western and Islamic views on women's rights, fanatical rigidity on one of them can only lead to conflict (which pluralism seeks to avoid). **Learning Objectives:** Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to: * Understand the concept of culture from a sociological perspective and its complexities. * Analyze the coexistence and interaction of different cultural forms. * Recognize the role of generations, identity, ethnicity, and race in social structures. * Grasp the tools for understanding and analyzing patterns of social group interaction.
Ciao!
