India is the sacred land of many realized saints and sages. The knowledge of the ultimate truth is the soul of Bharat (India). The ancient Bhāratīya (Indian) knowledge tradition is very rich and its aim is to develop the whole personality of a person while including Dharma, Artha, Kāma, Mokṣa. When the whole world was wandering in the darkness of ignorance, at that time by spreading the highest knowledge, the sages of Bharat freed human beings from animalism, made them complete human beings by inculcating human values in them.This attitude of education has been adopted in the Bhāratīya (Indian) tradition over the years and accordingly the education system and traditions of ancient times continued in universities and gurukulas. Svadeśī (indigenous) education was imparted in homes, temples, schools and gurukulas. The goal of education in Bhārata is not considered to be the enjoyment of world and worldly objects but as self-knowledge and liberation. All ancient Bhāratīya (Indian) scriptures point out that the sole purpose of the human birth is Self-realization. And it is for this very purpose that we are born as humans, because human birth is the only means for liberation.Gurukula system was the main pillar of education in Bhārata. The disciples used to study the eighteen Vidyās under the guidance of a Guru.
