This short course will present the technical principle and foundations overview in the domain of Drilling Engineering of oil and gas industry. Major outline topics will to be presented: •Introduction and Historical Overview of Drilling Engineering •Rigs and Well Types•Drilling Hydraulics•Drilling FluidsThe presentation traces the history of the oil and gas industry, starting with Edwin Drake's first oil well in 1859, the birth of the car, early off-shore drilling, and major incident. It touches on petroleum geology, explaining the Earth's layers and the role of geologists in identifying hydrocarbon deposits.A significant portion of the presentation is dedicated to the types of drilling rigs (land, platform, jack-up, semi-submersible, drill ship) and well types (vertical, J-shape, S-shape, horizontal). It also clarifies the objectives of exploration, appraisal, and development wells. Horizontal drilling is discussed in detail, highlighting its benefits in specific reservoir conditions, such as increased contact with the reservoir and reduced surface footprint.Drilling hydraulics are explained, covering frictional pressure loss, types of flow (laminar, transition, turbulent), and the Reynolds number. The document outlines the components of a drilling string, including the bottom hole assembly, transition pipes, and drill pipes, emphasizing their design and function. Drill pipe grades and classifications are described, based on yield and tensile strength. The final section focuses on drilling fluids (muds). The functions of drilling fluids are detailed, including cuttings removal, suspension, formation pressure control, wellbore stability, minimizing formation damage, bit lubrication, and hydraulic energy transmission. The talk ends with the mud classification.
