The kanjira is a traditional South Indian percussion instrument widely used in Carnatic music. Small yet powerful, it is known for its versatility and ability to produce intricate rhythms. The kanjira plays a crucial role in rhythmic ensembles, adding dynamic energy and texture to performances.My story with the Kanjira & Carnatic Music…I was drawn to this soulful rhythmic instrument after my tryst with Carnatic music in India. I had been a drummer and was mesmerized by the sounds created by this small percussion with large capabilities. The variety of sounds this single instrument could produce blew my mind, as I was used to playing a large drum set. I dedicatedly learnt to play this instrument from some great Kanjira players from India and studied the beautiful Solkattu which is an essential part of Carnatic music. I am now happy to spread the knowledge tofellow musical explorers.What will this course teach you?This beginner-to-intermediate kanjira course will guide you from foundational skills to creative rhythmic expression. You will start by learning the basic strokes, such as Tha, Dhi, Dhom, Nam and then progress to playing rhythmic cycles (talas) like Adi Tala (8 beats). Using solkattu (spoken rhythmic syllables), you will internalize rhythmic patterns and develop a strong sense of timing and precision.The course also includes exercises to build speed, control, and fluidity, rhythmic exercises, konnakol integration (vocal rhythm) with kanjira playing to enhance your creative potential.Whether you are completely new to the instrument or looking to strengthen your skills, this course offers a clear, step-by-step path to mastering the basics of kanjira.
