Course Description:This course provides a comprehensive and in-depth exploration of the band theory of solids, a cornerstone of modern condensed matter physics and materials science. Beginning with foundational concepts such as atomic orbitals, energy quantization, and crystal lattice structures, students will learn how discrete atomic energy levels evolve into continuous energy bands in crystalline solids. The course covers essential theoretical frameworks including Bloch's theorem, reciprocal lattices, Brillouin zones, and the effective mass approximation, which explain electron behavior in periodic potentials. Students will develop an understanding of how energy band structures determine the electrical, optical, and thermal properties of materials, and how these properties differ across conductors, semiconductors, and insulators.Advanced modules delve into sophisticated band structure models such as the nearly free electron and tight-binding approximations, and explore cutting-edge topics like topological insulators and low-dimensional materials. The course also introduces experimental techniques used to probe band structures, including angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM).By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the knowledge to analyze and predict electronic properties of materials, design semiconductor devices, and engage in research involving novel materials and quantum phenomena. Practical applications in electronics, photonics, and nanotechnology will be emphasized throughout the course to connect theory with real-world technologies
