Confused about this Fascism thing that you are hearing about more and more? You should be! This course provides an introduction to American Fascism, including a presentation of the idea of Fascism, why it is such a difficult term to understand and use, how the American version differs from the European version, and how the characteristics of American Fascism can be used as an analysis tool to identify political leaders who are Fascist and those who are not.Fascism is seeing a resurgence in the world, or at least use of the term is seeing a resurgence: it has been applied to the January 6th event at the U.S. Capitol building, and the recently-elected leader of Italy. The invention of Mussolini and espoused by Hitler, the term ‘Fascism, now holds a pejorative connotation, but this wasn't always the case in the first half of the 20th century - at that time, it was seen as a viable ‘third way' of government, an alternative to capitalism and communism, and there were vibrant and active Fascist movements in nearly every country at one point. American Fascism stood out then, as it does now, as originating from and oriented around businesses as business leaders applied the strategic management methods they learned in corporate competition to competition in the democratic political arena. This course gives a rational justification for Fascism, as well as an explanation as to why this ‘third way' of governance is sooooo wrong and ill-conceived, for any country.
