The first version of the 4G-LTE standard was ratified as 3GPP Release 8 in Dec 2008. The standard describes the evolved universal terrestrial radio access network (E-UTRAN), System Architecture Evolution (SAE), the parallel development for the core network, and the Evolved Packet Core (EPC). It provides the basis for future 3GPP Releases, including LTE-Advanced, LTE-Advanced Pro, and 5G. Although 5G technologies are available, 4G-LTE networks remain indispensable. These networks have become a global success, driven by ubiquitous multimedia social apps and they form the basis of 5G deployment. For example, many operators still use a non-standalone (NSA) 5G network, with 5G radios based on a 4G-LTE core.
