Middle Years Computer Science, or "MyCS" for short, is an online CS curriculum designed for classrooms ranging from late elementary to early high school. Our goal: to provide engaging, accessible, and easy-to-use content to middle-years teachers, who can implement the content in their classroom using their own specific pedagogical adaptations of activities and exercises. The course combines general exploration of computational thinking with specific assignments in Scratch, MIT’s visual programming language.
MyCS provides a high-level overview of major computing concepts: how computers work, how they store and work with information, and how they use algorithms to solve problems, all with the help of someone who can design the systems it uses. The lessons may be used as-is, in which case they provide a full-semester (18 week) computer science course, plus some more advanced supplementary coursework for anyone who would like to explore it. They may also be adapted/interwoven with existing courses that have related topics, e.g., tech electives, office-suite applications, business skills, etc. We hope that adding MyCS to those classes will help them bridge important application-specific skills with the skillset and mindset that comes with composing computing oneself.
We believe that every middle-years student should be able to confidently say that “CS is something that people like me can do,” and that the smartest way to reach those students is through the instructors who know them best. We hope to continue to empower teachers of all backgrounds to bring computational thinking to their classrooms.
