Who were Franklin, Eleanor, and Theodor Roosevelt? What values did the three Roosevelts (3Rs) stand for? How did these two presidents and one first lady influence the world we live in? This course explores twentieth century US history through these three unique leaders.
The 3Rs propelled the United States into a superpower. They were innovators, campaigners, mobilisers, communicators, and transgressors of tradition. They changed the way we think about security, equality, and freedom. They gave us images of the future which still inspire us today. The Roosevelt Century takes you through their time, and connects it with our own.
By looking at their public speeches, governing styles, leadership qualities, and major decisions, the course explores how the 3Rs shaped American politics and society, transformed the relationship between citizen and state, and changed the role of the United States in the world.
The legacy of the 3Rs can be found everywhere
in public life today, from media and entertainment to place names and online
sites. By linking these images and references to the past, participants will
take part in an exploration of the Roosevelt Century and how it is experienced
across the globe.
