课程详情

This course gives a broad overview of the maternal and newborn health issues facing developing countries, where more than 2.6 million babies are stillborn and nearly 500,000 women die during childbirth or from pregnancy complications each year. In the developing world, many women deliver at home without the support of skilled health providers and modern technology. Maternal and newborn survival can be improved by health systems strengthening emergency obstetric and newborn care while optimizing the health workforce to increase access to basic maternal and newborn health care services through task-shifting.

Through lectures, case studies, and readings, course participants will learn about maternal and newborn health delivery challenges across the world and how to utilize community-based strategies to improve survival rates for mothers and babies.

课程大纲

Module One: Introduction to Maternal and Infant Mortality in a Global Context

According to UNICEF, child mortality rates have been decreasing in past decades while both neonatal and maternal mortality rates have remained constant. In this module, we’ll explore the scope of the maternal and newborn health crisis, the inequalities and inequities between and within countries, and the major medical causes of maternal mortality and morbidity.

Module Two: The Impact of the Health Care Workforce Shortage on Care Delivery

The global health care workforce shortage is leading to understaffed hospitals and shuttered health clinics across the world. Because of this dangerous shortage, patients are left without the critical care they need for survival. This shortage is exceptionally acute in developing regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa, which has nearly 25 percent of the world’s disease burden, but only 3 percent of the world’s health care workforce. This module will cover strategies to alleviate the shortage and mal-distribution of the health care workforce—particularly among nurses and midwives—in developing countries.

Module Three: Ethiopia Case Study: Training Front-Line Community Health Workers to Deliver Maternal and Newborn Health Care

In Ethiopia, 22,000 women and 100,000 newborns die annually from complications of childbirth. In this module, we’ll study an innovative project in Ethiopia that is strengthening community-based health systems to ensure that all women and newborns receive effective maternal and newborn care services in Ethiopia. This project trains frontline health workers, such as health extension workers, community health workers and traditional birth attendants, in a basic package of life-saving maternal and newborn care that can significantly improve survival. Pregnant women are also taught to recognize the signs of pregnancy and labor complications and how to manage a safe referral.

Module Four: Improving Maternal Care Delivery through Community Mobilization

Community mobilization is the key to improving health care delivery for mothers and newborns. This module focuses on better understanding how individuals, organizations, and societies are collaborating to improve maternal and newborn health care delivery. Additional topics will include exploring community-based participatory research and developing culturally appropriate messaging strategies for health promotion campaigns.

Module Five: The Financial and Global Politics of Maternal and Newborn Care

The United Nations placed maternal care in the international spotlight after it was listed among the UN’s top Millennium Development Goals. Because maternal care has become a major international priority, universities, non-profits, and health care organizations are conducting research, securing funding, and launching projects aimed at strengthening maternal and newborn care across the world. In this module, we’ll discuss the financial and political realities of maternal and newborn care initiatives.
