This course will discuss the emergence of the modern Middle East from the 19th century to the end of the First World War. It will discuss the Ottoman legacy in the region, the rise of nationalism in the Middle East and the Western imperial impact on the creation of the Arab state system. The course will also discuss issues such as Islamic reform, religion and state and state cohesion, all of which are key to understanding the Middle East of today.

We do strongly recommend that you register for Part Two of this course -The Emergence of the Modern Middle East - Part II.

Taking both Parts would enable you to obtain a fuller and more comprehensive picture of the Modern Middle East.

Week One: 
Introduction to the Middle East; the structure of the society, economy and politics of the 19th century.

Week Two: 
The age of reform in the Middle East in the 19th century.

Week Three: 
The rise of nationalism in the Middle East, the First World War and the demise of the Ottoman Empire.

Week Four: 
The creation of the Middle East state system after the First World War.
