This course is designed to provide a basic overview of what is involved in the first year of a Veterinary Medicine degree. It will be of interest to those considering Veterinary Medicine as a career or those about to embark on their studies, as well as those keen to learn more about this profession generally or who are involved with caring for animals.
Over the five weeks the course will provide a taster of the subjects covered during the first year of the degree. It includes information on the profession’s past, present and future, as well as an introduction to body systems, basic animal care, and veterinary professional and clinical skills.
Week 1: The past, present and future of veterinary medicine
Where did veterinary medicine come from and where is it going? This week puts the veterinary profession in historical and scientific context to help you understand its wide role within society and human-animal relations.
Week 2: An introduction to Body Systems
The learning materials during this week will focus on providing participants with an overview of anatomy and physiology using selected body systems of the dog as examples. Participants will also be introduced to basic principles of histology. The week will conclude with an overview of comparative aspects of anatomy across different species and a demonstration of pathological change relevant to the systems taught earlier in the week.
Week 3: Basic Animal Care
This week will focus on animal care. It will consider the key concepts of what is required for the care of companion animals such as horses, cats & dogs and exotics. It will also look at the husbandry of production animals such as sheep and dairy cattle.

Being a successful veterinarian is not just about caring for animals; it is also about dealing with clients and having a strong understanding of business processes. During this week we will introduce the importance of key components such as leadership & management, running a business, client care, etc.

Clinical (or “practical”) skills are also essential for a veterinarian to offer excellent care to their patients and clients.
