课程详情

This course will offer a broad introduction to the core terms, concepts and current debates in the practice of the Clinical Psychology of Children and Young People.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of a positive and healthy childhood, and be able to offer theoretical perspectives on what constitutes this.
  • Understand and explain the social and familial context within which psychological problems may develop, and how environments may be modified in an attempt to ameliorate problems.
  • Ability to understand and to critically examine global differences in normative childhood and emerging mental health difficulties in different cultural and political contexts.

课程大纲

Week 1: An Introduction to Child Development

- Prof Schwannauer and Jo Williams

Overview of current theories of child development, reflecting on how these theories apply in practice.

Week 2: What is Child Well-being

- Dr Francisco Eiroa-Orosa

In this week we will conceptualise, analyse and present the essential theoretical models of psychological well-being across the lifespan, different social strata and cultures

Week 3: The Public Face of Child Mental Health

- Dr Thomas Hacker

The promotion of mental health is part of the wider field of health promotion and sits alongside the prevention and treatment of mental health problems. This week looks at the knowledge and skills required to incorporate health promotion principles, values and practices into child and adolescent mental health settings.

Week 4: Trauma and Resilience

- Dr Emily Taylor

This week looks at concepts of trauma and resilience in a developmental context. Past and current conceptualisations will be considered within applied settings to question how these conceptualisations help assessment and intervention for children and young people.

Week 5: Applied Developmental Psychopathology

- Prof Matthias Schwannauer

This week looks at problems arising from abnormal development, including common difficulties, and treatments, but also the common theoretical and clinical understanding of anxiety, depression, conduct problems, autism spectrum disorder and disorders from a developmental psychology perspective.
