Causes of War will introduce you to current thinking on the causes of armed conflict in the world today. It looks at a range of modern and historical conflicts and draws on a variety of theories and approaches. It will appeal to anyone with an interest in world affairs. If you complete the full course, you will define what war is and what it is not; familiarise yourself with both Liberal and Realist theories of international relations; explore arguments about the causes of both inter-state and non-state wars, both historical and current; and use evidence to evaluate different theories of war. If you are more selective about how you engage with the course, you will still achieve some of these objectives. You are free to choose your own pathway, and we welcome engagement with Causes of War at all levels. However you choose to engage, you will further develop your capacity for independent learning – and of course increase your understanding of world affairs.
